Does Rhode Island Energy pay for networked lighting controls?
Yes. Its retrofit program pays its top lighting tier for LEDs on a networked control system in existing buildings, with pre-approval, a written control sequence, high-end trim, commissioning and reporting. The incentive can go to you or to your vendor or installer. As of October 2026.
Does the code apply to my retrofit?
If you change the lighting in a space, yes. Rhode Island's 2024 code has no 10% threshold, so that space needs the current controls, tested before final inspection. Swapping only lamps or ballasts is a repair and doesn't trigger it.
Will Rhode Island Energy still pay for LEDs without controls?
Its plan for 2027, filed with the state's utility commission in October 2026, stops paying for indoor LED retrofit fixtures without controls and keeps paying for lighting controls. Exterior fixtures continue.
Can we keep our fluorescent fixtures?
The ban covers sales: since January 1, 2025, new linear fluorescent tubes can't be sold in Rhode Island. As stock runs out, replacing tubes gets harder, which makes now a good time to relight with controls.
